Frederick County Council Voted in Favor of Raising their Own Salary

Yesterday, the Frederick County Council voted in favor of raising their own salary, along with the County Executive’s salary to the tune of 40%+.

There are a few different ways to look at this:

  1. Future: No one ever raises their own salary just once, it quickly becomes an addiction. What is $35,000 today becomes $100,000+ tomorrow, similar to Montgomery County’s Council.
  2. Timing: Following an awful economic year, while many are still recovering from the pandemic, the council believes it is appropriate to vote themselves more money.

The timing could not be worse. No matter what way you look at it, raising the salary of both the council and executive puts a heavier burden upon the shoulders of taxpayers. Not to mention, the county budget will have to rise even more in 2023 to prop up this pay raise.
